Custom Cape Cod-style home in Pittstown, NJ
GTG Builders | Homeowner Spotlight
Building a home that reflects a new chapter in life requires thoughtful planning, smart design, and a focus on long-term comfort. For this Pittstown, NJ project, our clients set out to downsize while moving closer to family, creating a warm, efficient, and character-filled home where they can enjoy the years ahead.
Set on a beautiful property with an existing farmhouse, this project began with a full demolition to make way for a custom-built Cape Cod-style home. Along the way, the team worked through unique challenges, from reclassifying an existing well for agricultural use to adapting construction logistics without the convenience of a garage. The result is a timeless, highly personalized home that balances charm, durability, and a smaller, yet welcoming space.

classic Cape Cod Design with Modern Efficiency
This single-family custom home blends classic Cape Cod architecture with modern materials and low-maintenance finishes, making it ideal for a retirement-focused lifestyle. Our clients wanted a beautiful, smaller custom home that was perfect for hosting grandkids, but not as much to maintain. We tore down the original farmhouse on the property and built this custom Pittstown home in its place.
A 3-bedroom CUSTOM HOME and shifting priorities
This home features 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, with a first-floor primary suite designed for long-term accessibility and ease of living. A covered front porch with limestone edging creates a welcoming entry, while the dormered front elevation adds both architectural character and additional natural light to the interior. Built without a garage, the project required creative solutions for construction logistics and storage.
Every aspect of the layout was designed with downsizing in mind, allowing the homeowners to simplify their space without giving up quality or everyday livability. GTG Builders also worked with our professional contacts to shift the existing well on the property to agricultural use.

Downsized home for aging-in-place living
A major goal of this project was to create a home that lives comfortably on the first floor while still accommodating guests and family. Even though it was designed for the next chapter, this downsized NJ home proves that smaller living does not mean sacrificing quality or character. Every detail was customized to create a space that feels refined, comfortable, and truly tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle.
Updated layout for aging in place
The first-floor primary bedroom allows the homeowners to age in place without compromise, while the open living areas maintain a spacious feel. The absence of a garage, which is uncommon in new construction, required careful planning during the build phase, especially for material staging and trade coordination during inclement weather.
From a builder’s perspective, this type of layout emphasizes:
- Efficient circulation and minimal wasted space
- Strategic storage solutions
- Long-term livability and accessibility
Reclaimed interior doors
One of the most meaningful aspects of this project was the effort to preserve elements from the original farmhouse.
While structural components like beams and flooring could not be safely salvaged, the team reclaimed several interior doors, resized them to fit the new layout, and reinstalled them throughout the home. To make the process even more meaningful, the homeowner will complete the finishing work themselves, adding a personal touch that ties the new space back to the original farmhouse.
This approach adds authenticity and emotional value, something that cannot be replicated with new materials alone. It is a great example of how thoughtful planning during demolition can carry history forward into a modern build.
Elevated Finishes and Exterior Details
This home stands out through a combination of durable materials and carefully selected design features that enhance both its appearance and long-term performance. On the exterior, James Hardie board and batten siding provides lasting durability with a clean, classic look, while Dutch Quality Stone veneer on the porch columns adds texture and depth.
The limestone-edged covered front porch creates a refined, welcoming entrance, and black Andersen 400 Series windows with arched tops bring in natural light while reinforcing the home’s architectural character.
Inside, the focus continues with finishes that are both practical and visually appealing. Leathered granite countertops offer a low-maintenance surface with a subtle, natural texture, while LVP flooring delivers durability and water resistance ideal for everyday living. The interior trim remains simple and intentional, complemented by details like transom windows that introduce additional natural light and a shiplap backsplash that adds just the right amount of character.
Altogether, each selection supports a balance of style and function, aligning with the goal of creating a home that is comfortable, efficient, and built to last.
